In response to a 2001 congressional request, each of the 50 states created Wildlife Action Plans to identify their most vulnerable wildlife lands. Protecting habitat is the next step to ensuring the success and effectiveness of the wildlife action plans, and OSI is doing just that. Drawing on 10 years of experience in the Northern Forest, and our protection of more than 6,000 acres in the Southern Appalachians, OSI created Saving New England's Wildlife. With a lead grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF), the initiative awards grants in Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire to sustain, protect and enhance ecologically critical lands and waters identified by State Wildlife Action Plans, making their forward-thinking vision a reality. Saving New England's Wildlife seeks to accelerate the implementation of the action plans, build support for wildlife conservation and increase public and private funding for protection of high priority wildlife habitat. To date, Saving New England’s Wildlife has approved 15 grants. See press release and completed projects list. |
